SMART

SMART (Science, Math & Relevant Technology) classes give the girls the opportunity to build, take things apart, get dirty, use tools and computers, and play physical games that help teach geometry and spatial relations. The girls get to know what scientists do and what it feels like to be a scientist.

Programs include:

  • ACC (Animal Care Club)
  • SMART Nights
  • SMART Saturdays

ANIMAL CARE CLUB

Girls Inc. Animal Care Club provides girls with opportunities to interact with a wide variety of animals, most of which they would not encounter in their daily lives. They become responsible for the knowledge, care and maintenance of the animals. Activities in the Animal Care Club promote self-reliance, solid decision making, public speaking, financial management, teamwork, career planning and advocacy. The Animal Care Club has about 20 animals of all different species, including rats, frogs, fish, hermit crabs, a tarantula, cockatiel, chameleon, bearded dragon, anole, turtle and hissing cockroaches. Individuals and businesses financially support each particular animal through sponsorships. The Animal Care Club meets year round, and approximately ever two months, ten girls rotate through the club. It’s a club to which the majority of girls in the 7 – 11 age group choose to belong to each year.

SMART NIGHTS

SMART Nights are an awesome way to bring families together to learn about different areas of science all while having fun. The evening starts off with a tasty meal followed by interactive hands-on activities for all ages. We believe SMART Nights are a relaxing and enjoying night filled with knowledge and unity. Family and friends are encouraged to come visit one of our SMART Nights and see for themselves how much fun learning can be. We promise they will want to come back time and again.

SMART SATURDAYS

SMART Saturdays consist of two consecutive Saturdays; the first is an instructional classroom setting with many hands-on activities revolving around a particular theme, the second Saturday is a field trip to further elaborate and strengthen the knowledge of the lesson topic. Since space is limited to 10 girls; this is a wonderful way for your child to get a small group hands-on approach to learning more about science.

Examples of some of our past themes are; “Our Five Senses”, “Physics”, “Come Fly With Us”.

Unlike SMART Nights, your child does not have to be a member of Girls Inc. to participate in this wonderful program. A sign up sheet and medical form are requited to attend.

Introducing “Kid-Ability!”

“Kid-Ability!” is a nationally recognized sexual abuse prevention program for children ages 6-9. The information and skills children learn can help reduce their risk of being sexually abused. Children learn:

  • About their own strengths and abilities
  • How to speak assertively
  • To identify those times when they might be unsafe
  • About “good touches” and “problem touches”
  • To identify their private body parts.
  • Through role playing, what to do if they receive a problem touch on their private body parts.
  • To identify adults whom they can turn for help, if necessary.

Thought the specific focus of “Kid-Ability!” is child sexual abuse, the skills learned can help children remain safe from other types of abuse as well.

How “Kid-Ability!” Works-Kid Jr. (1st grade)

Kid Jr. provides a series of four training sessions. An adult instructor teaches each of the sessions. As children learn the skills, they also gain the confidence needed to feel and be safe. The four sessions, all based on the “Kid-Ability!” philosophy, are titled:

  1. My Special Abilities
  2. Keeping Myself Safe
  3. It’s My Body
  4. I’m Strong Enough to Ask for Help.

How “Kid-Ability!” Works-Big Kid (3rd grade)

Big Kid provides a series of four training sessions for up to 25 children. An adult instructor teaches each of the sessions that focus on learning skills for staying safe. As children learn the skills, they also gain confidence needed to feel and be safe. The four sessions, all based on the “Kid-Ability!” philosophy, are titled:

  1. I Know My Own Strengths
  2. I Can Make Safe Decisions
  3. I Can Protect My Body
  4. I Know How to Get Help
