JUVENILE JUSTICE The Juvenile Justice Program/Outreach Department currently encompasses adolescent and teen women, men and families in the Ventura County area. This department provides gender specific programming in the Juvenile Justice System in both Detention and Commitment settings. Detention housing is intended for going through the court process; however, it also serves to provide temporary custody of youth in need of short-term removal from the community and/or awaiting transfer to other jurisdictions or suitable placement facilities. Youth housed in commitment facilities are serving court imposed commitments of up to one year. The various programming spans the following areas: Careers and Life Planning; Health and Sexuality; Violence against Women; Effects of Media on Women; Rites of Passage Programs; Communication Skills; Cognitive Behavioral Skills; Gender Equity; Leadership; Culture and Heritage; Fine Arts; Economic Literacy; Job Skills; Computer Technology Skills; Dog Therapeutic Services; Case Management Support; Computer Graphic Design; and Health and Fitness programs which include a circuit training gym, Pilates, yoga and meditation circles with a nutritional education component.
The minors also provide community service projects in Ventura County to a local Senior Citizen Day Center donating handmade crocheted scarves. We have also partnered with Direct Relief International of Santa Barbara donating over 200 baby blankets that were handmade by the minors to be shipped to Swaziland, Africa in a project called “Outreach to Africa”, designed and supported by several Correctional Officers and our JJ Program Director. The Juvenile Justice Program/Outreach Department provides training workshops on Gender Specific issues to various agencies in the community, surrounding areas and at the National level, and provides community resources and referrals to local agencies for the minors. We are part of the Girls Incorporated National Project Bold Committee who designs, researches, and develops curricula to provide comprehensive, research-based tools to help girls and young women avoid, address, and cope with violence. http://www.girlsinc.org/ic/page.php?id=1.2.6 The Department has also been involved in providing data and antidotal documentation, pre/post evaluations on girls in the Juvenile Justice System to Girls Incorporated Public Policy Department in Washington D.C. We have provided information and personal interviews in Washington D.C. with Senator Biden’s office on various issues concerning girls who are in the Juvenile Justice System. In 2005, we provided narratives that were presented before Congress for the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA), the primary federal law that addresses domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking.
